record audio in powerpoint

These instructions are set out in 4 simple steps, and will configure the audio recording facilities built into Powerpoint so that you can record your presentation ready to be uploaded to us for conversion into Powerpack format.

To record a voice narration within Powerpoint, you will need a sound card, microphone, and speakers.
When you record a narration for your presentation, you run through the presentation and record on each slide. You can pause and resume recording, but you need to set up Powerpoint in a specific way for audio recording, and you need to record the audio using a specific technique. These areas are comprehensively explained below.

For us to convert your presentation for use on the web, Powerpoint must be set up to EMBED any audio files recorded into it. This makes for large file sizes for your presentation (which we will compress anyway) but is imperative so we can preserve the timings of your slides and slide transitions.

To set up Powerpoint to embed audio, follow these steps -

1. Open Powerpoint

2. Open Tools / Options from the main menu

3. In the General Tab which appears, set the option for linking files to 50,000 kilobytes as in the example shown.

To record a voice narration, you need a sound card, microphone, and speakers.

1. On the Outline tab or Slides tab in normal view, select the first slide in your presentation.

2. On the Slide Show menu, click Record Narration.

3. Click on change quality, set the format to PCM, and the attributes to 11.025 kHz, 16-bit, Mono, 21 kb/sec

4. Click on Save As, and name your setup web. When you finish, your dialogue screen should look like the one below. Now just click on the OK button.

5. Click Set Microphone Level, follow the directions to set your microphone level, and then click OK.

6. Make sure that the Link Narrations box (pictured below) remains unticked.

After setting up as described above, click on the OK button.

The presentation will now run in slide show mode, and will move forward in response to your mouse clicks.
1. In slide show view, speak the narrative text into the microphone, and click in the slide to advance. Speak the narrative text for that slide, advance to the next slide, and so on.
Once you've reached the end of your presentation, click within the black Exit screen.
2. The narration is automatically saved, and a message appears asking if you want to save the timings for the show as well.
3. To save the timings, click Save. Your slides appear in slide sorter view, with the slide timings shown below each one.
4. You now need to save the presentation itself.
