Internet Statistics Overview |
|
Do you have a web site optimised to take advantage of the enormous growth in the use of the Internet worldwide? The growth in the use of the Internet has been a global phenomenom, and especially in the commercial use of the Internet - with business to business e-commerce growth, auction sites such as E-Bay, shopping cart systems which facilitate the convenient, safe purchase of goods and services over the Internet, and, importantly, the ability of web site owners to actively promote their goods and services via search engine optimisation services.
As you will see from the statistics we have included in this area of our site, predictions of Internet growth that seemed hopeful at best at the time they were made, have been made to look foolishly conservative in light of the actual growth experienced, especially in the area of e-commerce.
The three areas we have focused our statistics on are Internet Usage, E-Commerce Spending, and Search Engine Usage Statistics.
As a web development company with a very strong focus on search engine optimisation, we hope you will be encouraged to explore how we can help you maximise the value of your web site investment through SEO. We have numerous SEO case studies and testimonials from clients who have benefited greatly from our SEO services, from corporates to small business owners.

We've provided some extraordinary statistics here, to do with the usage growth and penetration of the Internet around the globe. If you would like information on Australian internet statistics click here.
Please note that these statistics are gathered from various sources, and variances will occur due to the different sampling methods and criteria employed by the agencies. All sources are quoted, and links provided to their sites wherever possible.
In June 1998, Matrix Information and Directory Services (MIDS) reported that there were 102 million people accessing the Internet world-wide. This number had increased from their figure of 57 million in January 1997, representing an increase of almost 100% in just a year and a half.
The number of Internet users around the world surpassed 340 million in 2002, and was predicted to continue to grow strongly in the following five years. However, even the most optimistic growth estimates made at that would not have predicted that by December 2007, that figure of 340,000,000 would be almost doubled by the number of internet users in Asia alone, which showed an increase of 346.6% in the years 2000-2007. |

"Global eCommerce spending in 2005 was US$3.8 trillion, and has reached US$5.0 trillion in 2006. Meanwhile, in Asia/Pacific, ecommerce spending will reach approximately US$645 billion in 2006. " says Lincoln Lee, Senior Analyst, Telecommunication Research, IDC Malaysia.
Global e-commerce spending figures and trends can be difficult to quantify, but by tracking the excellent hard data available from the US and Australia, we can see some clear trends in the growth of e-commerce globally.
For example, in the US reports below, we can see that US e-commerce figures nearly tripled between 2002 and 2007. |

Multi-billion US Online Advertising market
The US online advertising market will reach $50.3 billion in revenue by 2011, more than doubling 2007 levels and growing 24% annually (CAGR), as brands increase their online ad spend and publishers improve ad targeting, inventory and yield management, according to the Yankee Group.
The internet accounts for approximately 20% of overall media consumption in the US, but advertisers now invest only 7.5% of their budget online - and as a result there is tremendous potential for marketplace growth as advertisers bridge the gap, Yankee said.
By 2011, nearly 25% of all media consumption will be online, drawing 15% of the advertising dollars, according to the recently published Yankee Group research report, “The Cowboys Dance On… and On: 2007 Online Advertising Forecast.” |
